MOTSM is not “ahead of its time” in any sense at all. It’s a typical 1970’s hard rock tune – a very, very good one, but it’s not 80’s rock at all. Why is ending the album – which was Ritchie’s album, btw – with a guitar workout “odd”??? If you had been following DP since 1969 the opening riff to this cover tune was taken from the live versions of “You Fool No One” so it should have been familiar to you when you took it out of the wrapper in those glorious days of August 1975.
