“Life In Dark Water” – there seems to be a howler. The ship referred to in the song is the “Mary Celeste”. It is often mistakenly referred to as “Marie Celeste”, which is what has happened here. The character in the song alludes to the change: “And now the name of the ship’s not the same. How long has it been “Marie Celeste?” The character may be one of the Mary Celeste’s vanished crew. The confusion about the name was created by the author Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote a short story based on the mystery of the Mary Celeste, in which he (probably accidentally) changed the name to Marie. It’s the latter spelling that most people now recognise.
